The Waiting Game
The amount of time it takes to get hired can vary. Sometimes the hiring process can be long, but don’t let this discourage you!
After you apply
There is typically a waiting period after you submit an application. Because employers’ hiring processes vary, the wait could range from a few days to a few weeks. It’s a good idea to follow up with the employer shortly after you apply to find out the status of the position and when they’ll be scheduling interviews. This lets them know you’re serious about the job and could also be an opportunity for you to start talking about your interests, skills and abilities.
After the interview
Before the end of every interview, be sure to ask the interviewer what the next steps are (when you can expect to hear back, from whom, and the planned hire date).
When you follow up after the interview, either by phone or email, be sure to:
- Politely ask about the status of your application
- Mention the name of the person who interviewed you, time and location of the interview, and the title of the job you interviewed for
- Re-express your interest in and enthusiasm for the job and the skills and talents you bring to the table!
